Intro

The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit provides rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with acute medical conditions. The unit brings together a single assessment area for patients referred by their GP, NHS 111, West Midlands Ambulance Service, George Eliot @ Home (our Virtual Ward service), or from the Emergency Department.

Our purpose-built SDEC unit offers an alternative to hospital admission, ensuring that patients receive timely and appropriate care whilst avoiding unnecessary overnight stays.

We are located on the ground floor next to the Dorothea Ward.

Same Day Assessment and Treatment: For patients who can be safely managed without admission, SDEC offers rapid diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up plans.

Planned Ambulatory Care: We also care for planned patients needing follow-up after discharge, such as blood tests, scans, treatments, or review following interventional procedures.

Admission Avoidance and Reduced Length of Stay: SDEC plays a crucial role in support the Urgent and Emergency Care pathway by prevent unnecessary admissions and improving patient flow, as well as facilitating patient discharge from hospital and reducing length of inpatient stay.

We accept referrals from General Practitioners (GPs), Emergency Department (ED), West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS), NHS 111, George Eliot @ Home (Virtual Wards), and hospital wards
