About the Service

The Gynaecology service at the George Eliot Hospital is delivered by a team of eight consultants and three Clinical Nurse Specialists.

All general gynaecology is undertaken with certain consultants having their own sub-specialities including; uro-gynaecology, minimally invasive surgery, endometrial investigative surgery and colposcopy and others.

Gynaecological cancers are also seen at the George Eliot Hospital as a Cancer Unit, liaising with the UHCW as the Cancer Centre. All suspected cancers attend the GEH for initial investigations and then are either treated here or follow on to the centre depending on their pathway.

We have two consultants who currently carry out suspected cancer investigations and surgery. There are three female consultants who perform colposcopy.

We run Urodynamics Clinics, Continence Advisor Clinics and have a dedicated Physiotherapist. We also run a Continence and Midwifery Service initiative, which encourages women at risk of incontinence to use the continence service early in the post-natal period and plays a preventive role.

We have a dedicated Gynaecology Diagnostic Unit and provide diagnostic and therapeutic services for the outpatient assessment and treatment of heavy menstrual and post-menopausal bleeding. This service includes ultrasound scanning and operative outpatient hysteroscopy.

There are three Clinical Nurse Specialists who support all the gynaecology patients especially those who may be suspected of having a cancer. There is a nurse led cervical cytology clinic and a Nurse led Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit.
