Patients, who have trouble with their breathing, are invited to attend free singing workshops at the George Eliot  Hospital

Singing for breathing is aimed at patients who experience breathlessness, particularly those who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and heart problems. The workshops are run by the Respiratory service at the hospital, and supplement existing support provided to patients. Those who attend are given coaching and a better understanding of breath control by singing in a group setting.

Participants are expertly guided and conducted by Dr Una May Olomolaiye, and the attendees have seen great results, so much so that staff at the hospital are encouraging even more people to come along.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Nurse specialist, Lisa Taylor said “Patients say that singing for breathing has a very positive effect on their wellbeing, their sense of community and their physical health.”

“We would like to see more people join us for these classes. You will be surprised by what you can do with a little help!”

Patients who have been attending the fortnightly workshops have noted improvements in their breathing. Roy Cooper said: ”My wife persuaded me to go to the classes, but it is brilliant. You know when you have been because my breathing is so much better, and it is great to get support from professionals at the workshops.”

The fortnightly workshops take place in the hospital chapel and are held between 12:30pm and 1:30pm.

You do not need to book in advance but, if you would like more information, please contact 024 7615 3725. For directions to the chapel, just ask at the reception.
