IMG_0657.JPGGeorge Eliot Hospital NHS Trust is delighted to announce the opening of its newly transformed central courtyard garden, specially developed exclusively for staff as a tranquil retreat to relax and enjoy a break from the pressure and demands of their roles.

The funding to develop this essential new space has been provided through a £55,000 grant from NHS Charities Together, coordinated through George Eliot Hospital Charity who also provided more than £11,500 of funding themselves, with the plan to create three dedicated staff breakout spaces across the hospital.

The development is a central part of the Trust’s Healthy Activity, Volunteering Engagement, Nurturing Staff (HAVENS) project which aims to create ‘havens’ for staff by transforming underutilised green spaces around the hospital

At the heart of this serene space is the Aika pod — a dedicated area designed for hospital staff to pause, reflect, and connect, whether individually or in small groups. The pod and seating areas were generously donated by local company Ornate Garden.

Jenni Northcote, Chief Strategy, Improvement and Partnerships Officer at George Eliot Hospital Trust said: “This garden has been created as a heartfelt thank you to our staff for their incredible dedication and resilience.”

“We know how important it is to have a quiet space to unwind and recharge, and we’re thrilled to provide this beautiful environment to support their wellbeing.

“We’d like to than NHS Charities Together and George Eliot Hospital Charity for making this possible.

“Huge recognition too for our estates team who have supported the project.”

The central courtyard garden has been lovingly brought to life by the hospital’s incredible volunteer team, whose commitment and care have been instrumental in making this space a reality. Their efforts have created a welcoming haven designed specifically for the wellbeing of hospital staff.

“We are immensely grateful to our volunteer team for their passion and hard work in creating this special garden,” added Jenni.

“It’s a place where our staff can step away, breathe, and find a moment of calm during what can be very demanding days.”

Jon Goodwin, Head of Grants at NHS Charities Together said: “It’s fantastic to see what the team at George Eliot Hospital have been able to achieve so far with the funding provided from the NHS Charities Together Covid Recovery grants programme. We know that NHS staff continue to work under immense pressure driven by record demand, staff shortages and increased workload, which is why the help we provide for projects such as this that support their wellbeing and mental health is now more important than ever.

“Having green spaces like these to enjoy a moment of peace and calm can make a huge difference to the mental wellbeing of all those working within a busy hospital environment, and I’m sure it will continue to be enjoyed and appreciated by staff and volunteers here for many years to come.”

The garden is open exclusively to George Eliot Hospital staff and serves as a tribute to their ongoing dedication and hard work.
