What is a Pain Management Programme?

A Pain Management Programme is a non-medical treatment approach which aims to empower patients to gain more control and confidence in managing their persistent pain.

The programme offers patients the chance to learn about the mechanics of pain, in addition to practical skills to help manage ongoing symptoms (including physical and psychological techniques). The programme aims to teach patients how to recognise and manage potential flare ups, teaching long term management strategies which enable patients to let go of pain related fear, and reconnect with important aspects of life which may have felt too overwhelming before.

The programme is delivered by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Psychologists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists. Sometimes other healthcare professionals can also be involved in programme delivery.

Assessment for the Pain Management Programme.

Once you have been referred you will be offered a virtual pre-programme assessment with the facilitators.  This is to assess your suitability for the programme and if this is something you would like to try. Also, we can discuss how the programme may benefit your pain management needs. This is also your opportunity to ask any questions you may have after reading this leaflet. If you are not suitable for the group, advice will be given based on individual need.

How is the Pain Management Programme Delivered?

The Pain Management Programme is a Face-to-Face group and facilitated jointly between a Health Psychologist and a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist. There will be 8 to 10 other patients in the group who also have persistent pain. There are 7 sessions of 2.5 hrs in duration. Dates, times and location will be given once a place becomes available.

How do I know if the Pain Management Programme will be right for me?

This will be discussed at the pre-programme assessment. However, before accepting a place, it is useful to be aware that to get the most out of the Pain Management Programme, active participation from the patient is required. Success in long-term management of persistent pain is achieved by practicing and utilising the techniques that are taught on the programme each week.

What have other patients who have finished the Pain Management Programme said about it?

“It has taught me to not let the pain control / dictate my life as much”

“It has helped me to understand my pain and how to deal with it. How to pace myself more.  And how to deal with flare ups. The handouts are great to jog my memory as I often forget things”

“You’ve given me so much more understanding of myself. Before the classes I ran away from my pain and buried it instead of facing it. I am a working progress but feel so much more in control thank you.”
