The Gastroenterology Day Unit is celebrating the implementation of a new machine which will provide a boost in the delivery of safe, accurate and efficient patient care.

The Sonosite PX Ultrasound System, kindly donated by the League of Friends, allows staff to use real-time ultrasound guidance when performing important procedures like paracentesis (ascitic) drains, which is used to safely drain fluid from the abdomen.

The machine provides a crystal-clear view inside the body, helping clinicians pinpoint exactly where fluid pockets are and where to safely insert the needle. This significantly reduces the risk of accidental injury.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the League of Friends for this donation,” said Daljit Chohan, Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

“This new ultrasound system is a huge benefit to our patients and will allow staff to have important hands-on experience in ultrasound-guided procedures with industry-leading equipment.”

The League of Friends, founded in 1955, have helped to provide a range of medical equipment, including defibrillators, physiotherapy equipment and many more items which improve patient care at George Eliot Hospital.

They also run two tea bars at the hospital, which provide staff and patients with refreshments in the main building and our maternity building.
