Over 140 runners braved the poor weather forecasts to take part in the first ever George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust 5k Fun Run. Fortunately, despite these forecasts, the weather held and the Trust raised over £2,500 to purchase valuable equipment for the Trust’s Breast Care Unit.
The event was started by Councillor Bob Copland, Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth and amongst the runners was Marcus Jones, MP for Nuneaton. Leaving from the Trust’s training and education centre, runners completed one lap of the hospital before doing a circuit of Bermuda Lake and returning to the hospital.
The winner of the men’s race was Namir Batin from Nuneaton. The winner of the women’s race was Claire Hune, who was representing Red Roofs GP Surgery in Nuneaton.
The event was preceded by a health fair with representatives from various health and wellbeing groups across the county.
Mr Raj Reddy, Clinical Director and head of the Fun Run organising groups, said: “What a fantastic day, thank you to everyone who took part and helped to make the event such a success.
“So far we’ve raised over £2,500 and we expect more to come in from sponsorship. All the money will help towards the purchase of a new £80k ultrasound scanner for the Trust’s Breast Care unit.
Kevin McGee, Chief Executive, added: “The support we received and the money we raised surpassed our expectations; we’ll definitely be looking at making it an annual event and we hope that next year’s is bigger and better.”
