Changes to pathology times at George Eliot Hospital

The pathology department at George Eliot Hospital is making changes to its blood testing service with a view to cutting waiting times.

From January, all blood tests at the George Eliot pathology department between 7-9am will be by appointment only. Fasting patients or those needing to get to work early will be given priority for appointment slots at this time. For the remainder of the day (9am-4.45pm, Monday-Thursday and 9am-4.15pm Friday) the service will revert to its normal drop-in system. It is likely that, initially this will lead to increased demand between 9-11am, however the pathology department will monitor this on a daily basis.

This change follows a number of complaints about waiting times in the department and aims to speed up the process for all patients. The team are also encouraging patients to attend the unit at quieter times of the week, especially Thursday and Friday afternoons.

Patients wishing to make an appointment can call 02476 153 546 between 10am-3pm to book.

Following the complaints, the pathology team are conducting a full review of the service and moving forward are looking at increasing blood testing in the community and holding dedicated clinics for patients on anticoagulant (blood thinning) drugs.
