Digital innovation to transform maternity care for mums to be

George Eliot Hospital has launched a new digital system for parents-to-be to register their pregnancy and access their care notes.

The new system called BadgerNet is a fully electronic patient record, which supports clinical and administrative management of the woman’s complete maternity journey.  Women will be able to self-refer to the maternity unit and the current paper-based records (green notes) will be replaced by an app called Badger Notes.

Mums-to-be can self-refer directly into the Maternity unit, via the online booking app, where they will fill in their details. They can then book an appointment with a community midwife through their GP or local children’s and family centre.

Women who do not have digital access, will be able to telephone the service to self-refer for their pregnancy care.

Badger Notes will replace patient notes from mums to be that have registered after the 15th November 2021. Badger Notes allows pregnant woman real time access to their maternity, child or neonatal records. The notes page shows an individual’s antenatal booking appointments, appointment history, visit history and ultra-sounds scans (if published on their personal page on the app). It includes patient leaflets and the functionality to allow women to add their own pregnancy diary. Information can be shared more easily with pregnant women and directly from the maternity system, records can be easily updated at each maternity visit or appointment and it also reduces administration for midwives.

Women who have already registered and received their first midwife appointment will not be required to download the app as they will continue to use their hand held ‘green notes’ records. However, it is expected that all women will have access to BadgerNet by summer 2022.

Paulina Patrykowska was one of the first mums-to-be to try the new app. She said: “I was asked to test the new app before it went live as I had shown an interest. While testing I made two small comments that were taken into consideration. I have now filled out the form and it was easy and straightforward to use."

George Eliot Hospital, Associate Director of Midwifery, Claire Price, said: “We’re delighted to have launched this new portal to give families that we provide care for easy online access to their notes. The app is simple to use and families will have access to Badger Notes benefits straightaway.

“This innovation supports our ongoing development to put families at the heart of everything we do; from the moment they refer themselves to the maternity unit to their post-natal care.”

BadgerNet is provided by a company called Clevermed Ltd and used by healthcare professionals involved in maternity care. All information is held securely and cannot be accessed without the correct login details (similar to internet banking).
