Bereavement room

Fundraisers Claire and Scot Barlow visited the George Eliot Hospital Maternity Unit to officially open a special room for parents in the labour suite to support bereaved families who have experienced the loss of a baby.

The couple had started ‘Ariana's Hope’, a charity set up in memory of their baby daughter Ariana who sadly passed away in November 2014. Their kind donation was used to buy equipment for this beautiful and sensitive room which now includes comfortable seating, television, a coffee maker and a radio.

Their donation has been used to purchase equipment to provide a more comfortable environment for parents. The room has also been refurbished to become a sensitive and practical environment for families who have experienced a similar loss.

George Eliot Hospital Maternity Unit has two specially trained bereavement link midwives to support parents through their tragic experience. The unit also has a “cuddle cot” to allow parents more time to spend with their baby and offers memory boxes to bereaved parents.

Head of midwifery Alison Talbot said "We would like to thank Claire and Scot, their friends and family again for their contribution to create this purpose built area for families that need support at a very difficult time."

Friends and family of Claire and Scot attended the official opening along with the George Eliot Hospital Acting Chief Executive, Kath Kelly, Fundraising Coordinator, Jean Whittaker MBE and several members of the maternity team.

Claire and Scot had developed an online donation website, held a car boot sale and bake sales to raise money for their fund. The couple are also currently organising an auction and charity ball at the Leicester Space Centre on 21st November 2015.
