What is an NHS Foundation Trust?
NHS foundation trusts are part of the NHS that work to the same principles and quality standards as other NHS organisations. There are a number of differences between NHS trusts and NHS foundation trusts:
· Foundation trusts are accountable to local people who can become members and governors.
· Foundation trusts have a duty to consult and involve their board of governors in the strategic planning of the organisation.
· Foundation trusts are independent legal entities called public benefit corporations.
· Foundation trusts are free from central government control and as self-standing, self-governing organisations are free to determine their own future.
· Foundation trusts have different financial freedoms.
