With ice on the ground and temperatures below zero forecast for the rest of this week, the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) across Coventry and Warwickshire are reminding people to take extra care when venturing out in the cold.
Winter is always a busy time for Accident and Emergency departments. Each year a rise in attendances is brought on by ailments, slips, trips and falls due to icy weather conditions and increases in heart and respiratory problems caused by cold weather.
Local emergency services can get very busy at this time of year with people attending with injuries from slippery paths and falls due to icy conditions. It is worth remembering that black ice on pavements or roads might not be clearly visible, and in the event of snow that compacted snow may turn to ice causing a hazard. Wear sturdy, flat soled shoes or boots with good grip and wrap up warm when you are out and about in very cold weather.
Dr Heather Gorringe, GP and Chair at NHS Warwickshire North CCG, said: “Just by taking that extra bit of care when leaving the house, you can help prevent you and your family from nasty falls and sprains. Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to cold weather. Cold weather is especially dangerous for older people or people with serious illnesses, so check up on them if you can.”
If you’re feeling under the weather and you need medical help or advice urgently but it's not a life-threatening situation, you can call NHS 111 for advice. The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones. There are a range of NHS services available, local pharmacists can provide a range of services and ‘on the spot’ help and advice on minor ailments.
