Behind the scenes in operating theatres

Elise and Lorraine

Nearly 100 people took the rare opportunity to see behind the scenes at George Eliot Hospital’s operating theatres on Saturday 5 March.

The event, which ran from 10:30am till 1:30pm attracted potential recruits of all ages as well as interested members of the public, keen to see what goes on in an operating theatre. BBC Radio Coventry and Warwickshire broadcast live from the event, further boosting numbers on the day.

Theatre staff recreated the whole patient journey through the theatre, re-enacting the anaesthetic procedure, equipment checking and recovery.

One visitor was 17 year old Elise Dodic, a sixth form student at Nicholas Chamberlain School. “I want to be a nurse and have looked at different hospitals. My grandad was treated here at George Eliot and I really liked the atmosphere. I’m here to find out about a work placement – it’s been really interesting seeing the different roles on offer.”

Director of Nursing, Michelle Norton was at the event and said; “It was fantastic to welcome so many people through the doors on Saturday. Our Theatres team did us proud by volunteering on their days off to recreate a truly authentic theatre experience for our visitors.“
