George Eliot Hospital support Nutrition and Hydration Week

Nutrition and Hydration Week March 2016

Nursing staff across George Eliot Hospital supported Nutrition and Hydration Week (14-20 th March) by hosting a number of special events across the hospital to highlight the importance of nutrition and hydration to patients, their families and carers.

Nutrition and Hydration Week 2016 was a national campaign asking everyone to pledge their support to highlight the importance of nutrition and hydration as an essential element of care.

Alexandra, Nason, Melly, Elizabeth, Bob Jakin and Mary Garth wards all held their own local events to raise awareness and participated in a global tea party on Wednesday 16th March. Mary Garth ward also held special daily events including a special ‘Fruity Friday’ to support this important week to raise awareness and improve the knowledge of patients and their families/carers.

The opening of a new catering grade kitchen for Melly and Nason wards coincided with the event. Staff on the wards will benefit from working in this new and improved environment and patients, particularly those with dementia or cognitive impairment, will also benefit from a new range of adapted crockery that will give them more dignity and independence while eating and drinking. This crockery was kindly donated by George Eliot Hospital’s League of Friends.

This week was part of a programme of activities organised by the Nutrition team at George Eliot Hospital to highlight the importance of good nutrition and hydration. They are already planning an even bigger and better event week next year.
