George Eliot Hospital opens its doors at Christmas to visit from civic leaders

Mayor visit 2016

A festive visit from local Mayors was warmly welcomed by staff and patients at the George Eliot Hospital this week.

The Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Cllr Jill Shepherd, Mayor of North Warwickshire, Cllr John Smitten, Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth, Cllr Richard Allen and Chair of Warwickshire County Council Cllr Bill Hicks were given a group tour to meet and greet patients on Monday 19th December. The group also had an opportunity to see first-hand the brand new £4.1m Endoscopy building due to open early next year.

George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust Chairman Stuart Annan, Chief Executive Kath Kelly and Director of Nursing Michelle Norton hosted the group visit for the respective Mayors and their consorts. Leaders at the hospital also had an opportunity to talk to the local dignitaries about current investment in services for patients at the hospital.

A busy tour started with John Goodman from Anker radio recording a special Christmas message from each of the Mayors aimed at those patients staying at the hospital over the holiday period.

The group visited Maternity Unit Drayton ward where they met a few of the new mums and their babies.  They also had an opportunity to see some of the special facilities in the maternity unit including a large new family lounge and specialist equipment which is part of a research project helping to track the weight of babies born to mothers with Gestational Diabetes. The Peapod research project will help to understand whether these babies are more likely to develop obesity and Type 2 Diabetes when they become adults.

A visit to oncology treatment ward, Dorothea to meet the welcoming staff and patients was followed by a visit to the exciting new state of the art Endoscopy Building, which is very close to completion. This financial investment will transform the service into a centre of excellence for endoscopy, providing enhanced high quality care to patients in the area. It is due to open to patients as early as February 2017.

The successful visit finished with a trip to the main outpatients department where the group talked to staff and patients waiting for appointments.
