A special garden area for parents who have experienced pregnancy loss was officially opened this week at George Eliot Hospital

This new private garden patio is linked by French windows from a specialist room which is available to bereaved parents.

Christian and Jodie Boyle, Nicola Rygielski and Sarah Watts who all fundraised for the new garden came along to open the new patio which features privacy fencing and garden furniture. This private area also features a separate entrance into the beautiful maternity garden, maintained by the hard working staff within the maternity unit. Parents can also now exit the maternity area privately without re-entering the delivery suite.

These dedicated volunteers and fundraisers, who are all also members of Sophia pregnancy support group, have organised open days and a band night to raise money for the bereavement service. Christian had also participated in a Wolf Run to help raise funds for the maternity unit as well as organising a ‘Give and Gain’ volunteering event last year. Christian had raised £750 from the Wolf Run which is a 10k challenging obstacle course event.

Director of Nursing, Michelle Norton said: “I am extremely proud to open this garden patio area which is the result of great partnership working between the fundraisers and our own midwives.

“It is now open for all future families who need their own personal space after experiencing baby loss.”

SOPHIA is aimed at families who have experienced baby loss at any time, from early pregnancy to late pregnancy. The group meet monthly to have a coffee, chat or just offer support to others. They also organise events to help raise money for the hospital and to support other parents.

Anyone interested in the group can come along to Combe House between 6-8pm starting Tuesday 1 March 2016. Further meetings will be held on the first Tuesday each month.

Combe house is one of the one floor brick office buildings on the main hospital site, opposite the main hospital building, in College Street, Nuneaton, CV10 7DJ (on the right of the main visitor car park). You can contact Sophia via email sophiagroup16@gmail.com or visit their facebook page.www.facebook.com/SophiaPLS
