Healthwatch Warwickshire Launch District Workshops

Patients are being given the chance to make their voices heard and help shape future decisions affecting health and social care across Warwickshire.

Consumer ‘champions’ Healthwatch Warwickshire have teamed up with Public Health Warwickshire to hold a series of public workshops aimed at gathering people’s views and experiences about the care and support they receive, whether that’s from their GP practice, health visitor, carer or social worker.

The idea is to find out what’s working well, and what’s not – and, more importantly, get feedback on what can be done to bring about real changes.

The half-day workshops are being held at venues all over Warwickshire between November and April, and are open to individuals, community groups and organisations. The information given will remain confidential, and lunch will also be provided.

One of the key aims is to explore whether people feel as independent as they would like to, and what would make them feel more in control of their own health and wellbeing.

The feedback gathered during the events will be presented to key decision makers and providers of health and social care at a final seminar next May, and it is hoped that will help shape important decisions about how services are delivered in future.

Chris Bain, chief executive of Healthwatch Warwickshire, said: “There is currently a culture of health and social care which needs to be challenged. Many people do not realise that they have the right to challenge a diagnosis given by their GP if they disagree with it.

“I think it is vitally important that individuals understand that the course of treatment suggested by a professional in the health and social care sector is not always the best thing for them. We know ourselves better than anyone and patients need to be a partner in their own care.”

The first workshop is for the Nuneaton and Bedworth District and will take place in the afternoon, after Warwickshire CAVA’s AGM.
