A Heath Care Assistant based on George Eliot Hospital’s Alexandra Ward has earned national recognition with a prestigious award from leading NHS temporary staff provider, NHS Professionals (NHSP).

Tracey Tyler, who works night shifts on the ward, was selected from 500 nominees across England to receive their “Going the Extra Mile” (G.E.M) Award.

Nominated by nurses who work with her, Tracey took the initiative to improve nutrition on the ward by doing nightly tea and snack rounds to encourage wound healing, all helping to greatly improve patient care and experience.

Celebrating her award, George Eliot Hospital’s Nursing Director, Daljit Athwal, said: “Tracey has excellent communication skills and is an exceptionally caring and friendly member of the ward team. She upholds our Trust values and her colleagues praise her as a fantastic person to work alongside.  Well done to Tracey and thank you to our partners at NHS Professionals for recognising her contribution.”

Dan Hinsley, Chief Operating Officer at NHS Professionals, who presented the award to Tracey, said: “I’m delighted to have had the privilege to meet Tracey this morning and present her with her G.E.M award. Our judging panel thought Tracey’s initiative to improve nutrition on the ward was innovative. We are proud to have such a forward-thinking bank member as part of NHSP family. Congratulations Tracey!”

The nomination was received from Clare Harries, Staff Nurse at George Eliot, who added: “Tracey has excellent communication skills, talking with patients, comforting them and taking a genuine interest in their experience and always aiming to improve their stay where possible. Tracey promotes safe and effective care, both for herself and amongst her colleagues. She is an absolute credit to the ward and routinely receives positive feedback from patients about her professionalism and work ethic. We are very proud!”

NHSP launched the G.E.M awards in 2019 to recognise bank members who go above and beyond, showing outstanding commitment in supporting their Trust and making a real difference to patients’ lives every day.
