Community group opens the shed doors to the public to mark International Men’s Day

Men in Sheds are having an open event to tie in with International Men's Day.

A community group based at Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital are holding a special event promoting men’s health in recognition of International Men’s Day.

The Men in Sheds workshop, based in the newly-opened Community Hub on the hospital site, is set to open their doors to the public on Tuesday, November 20 from 10am until 12pm with an open workshop and coffee morning.

Men in Sheds is a group aimed at retired and unemployed men in the Nuneaton and the local area with time on their hands, providing them with the opportunity to use and learn woodworking skills in a friendly, social environment and have chat over the odd cuppa too.

The event on Tuesday will give visitors the chance to see what they are working on and get information on signing up for the group with sessions starting next year. All are welcome – not just the men – and there will be free refreshments, biscuits and cakes available.

Representatives from Macmillan and Public Health will be on hand to chat and give out information relating to men’s health issues.

The celebration comes a day after the official International Men’s Day, on November 19, which this year has the appropriate theme of, ‘Making A Difference for Men and Boys’.

Arts officer for the George Eliot Hospital, Luke Veasey, said: “By giving volunteers a space to socialise and build a support network, as well as using their hands, groups like Men in Sheds can help their members to avoid problems like social isolation and depression.

“These are issues that many men have difficulty addressing and is therefore a fitting place to hold an event for International Men's Day with its message of promoting men's health.”
