A team of specialist health workers at Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust has picked up a national award for its outstanding contribution to respiratory care.
George Eliot’s respiratory care team were named Respiratory Team of the Year on Friday (May 10) as part of the annual Association of Respiratory Nurse Specialists conference, held in Newport, Wales.
The award acknowledged the team’s phenomenal work with patients in Nuneaton and the surrounding areas, which includes the hospital’s successful Singing for Breathing group, as well as its monthly Respiratory Support Group and the team’s work to help patients dealing with long-term, life-limiting conditions and stages of grief.
Their dedication to going the extra mile for patients was also picked up in the hospital’s recent CQC inspection report, which highlighted the Singing for Breathing group as an example of outstanding care.
“We are so pleased and proud to have received this award,” said senior clinical nurse, Karen Hennessy.
“The team works exceptionally hard to provide top-class care to support all our patients, educating them so they have the tools to manage their conditions well so they can have a better quality of life. We are absolutely delighted that our work has been recognised at such a high level.”
Singing for Breathing meets fortnightly with a qualified choir leader. The average session has 20-30 participants and is also open to referrals from other specialities, such as cardiology.
The respiratory team also comes together for a reflective meeting to review their service. They were also praised for its commitment to training after launching an in-house programme for all staff covering conditions such as COPD, asthma, breathlessness management and smoking cessation, which again benefits patients.
