Career Taster Day for local schools

Career taster day Feb 2015

Students from local colleges and sixth forms from schools across Warwickshire and Coventry attended a ‘Careers in Health’ Taster Day at George Eliot Hospital to learn more about a career in the NHS.

A Career Marketplace showcased a variety of skills within the NHS and clinical specialisms. Staff from the George Eliot Hospital and other local NHS partnerships talked to students about a range of skills. Attendees had a chance to speak to medical nurses, nurses, student midwives, radiographers, dietitians, the special care dentistry team and many more. This was an opportunity to find out what it is like to be a professional in the NHS whether it be a Speech Therapist or a nurse within Opthamalogy.

Students also had a chance to learn about different clinical skills in the George Eliot's own mock clinical labs and wards, learning about skills including airway management, external defibrillation and Venepuncture.

Everyone that attended the event hopefully went away with knowledge that would help them make decisions about their future careers whether they want to be doctors, physiotherapists, nurses or one of the many other careers showcased at the event.

George Eliot Hospital Work Experience Co-ordinator said: “This career fair was a positive way to get local students interested in careers in the NHS. The students were able to see the wide range of careers available and then learn more about how to achieve their goals. ”

Schools and colleges taking part included: St Thomas Moore sixth form, Etone Sixth Form College, Kenilworth School, North Warwickshire Hinckley College, Cardinal Newman, Rugby School and Nicholas Chamberlaine.
