A support group which helps patients who have had cancer is urging people to join a sponsored walk that will raise money to continue their work.

The Bowel Cancer Patients Support group, who meet at the George Eliot Hospital each month, has organised their event for Sunday, September 23 starting at the George Eliot Hospital Training and Education Centre (GETEC) at 10am. This is the second year the group have organised a walk and hope to build upon the success from their first event.

The Bowel Cancer Support Group will lead either a short family walk (five miles) or an extended route for more experienced walkers, which is eight miles. Entry fee is £2 on the day and dogs, children and families are welcome.

Colorectal Nurse Specialist, Louise Roberts said: “This sponsored walk will help the group raise money to support other patients and we are also inviting local people to join us to support a good cause.

“If you can raise sponsorship too that would be a real bonus. Free parking will be available outside our GETEC building.”

“Last year support for the group at the previous sponsored walk and a quiz helped to purchase five large televisions for Alexandra Ward, which benefits patients recovering from bowel cancer operations.”

The sponsored walk is just one of a number of fundraising activities coming up in the next few months. The support group has also organised a Christmas quiz night on Friday, November 23 from 7.30pm at the Griff and Coton (Christmas jumpers optional).

The free Bowel Cancer Support Group is open to anyone who has experienced colorectal cancer, and is hosted by the team of clinical nurse specialists from the George Eliot Hospital. They meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 6pm - 8pm in the George Eliot Hospital Training and Education Centre (GETEC). Patients can share their experiences and offer valuable support to each other.

All proceeds will be used to buy resources to support cancer patients, hospital equipment or patient support.

Anyone interested in getting involved with the sponsored walk or quiz night, or in joining the Bowel Cancer Patients Support Group, can contact group member John on 07747 623952 or email colorectal@geh.nhs.uk
