Bladder Weakness Event

Practical event to provide tips and techniques to women concerned about bladder weakness.

How often have you said any of the following; ‘Don’t make me laugh’ or ‘I have to cross my legs’? Do you need to wear pads to control leakage when you cough or sneeze?

If you are concerned about any of these issues you are invited to a free special event for women on Wednesday 2 March 2016 at the George Eliot Hospital Training andEducation Centre at 6.30pm.

Bladder issues are important and this practical tips and techniques evening is open to all women in Nuneaton, Bedworth, North Warwickshire and the surrounding area.

Millions of women in the UK have some degree of urinary incontinence. The most common reason for having this condition are changes that have occurred to the muscles and support structures of the pelvic floor after pregnancy and childbirth.

Incontinence is the loss of bladder control. It is not a disease or a syndrome, but the result of certain medical conditions and lifestyle choices. It causes a great deal of distress and embarrassment for the individual. Patients also incur costs trying to support their issues.

Myths and misconceptions about bladder control problems often interfere with appropriate management of any conditions. Some of these myths are:-

  • Bladder control loss is a normal part of aging, especially in older women and nothing can be done to improve bladder health
  • The only successful treatment for bladder control loss is surgery
  • Drinking less fluid will improve bladder control loss
  • Diapers and pads are the only option to manage bladder control loss 

Gynaecology Consultant, Mrs Neena Navaneetham said:” You don’t have to suffer in silence and it doesn’t have to mean wearing pads your entire life with this problem. Did you know there are multiple ways to control incontinence?”

A few of the recommendations include:

  • Lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and cutting down on caffeine and alcohol
  • Pelvic floor exercises (exercising your pelvic floor muscles by squeezing them) taught by a physiotherapist
  • Bladder training (where you learn ways to help you can wait longer between needing to urinate and passing urine) guided by a Continence Advisor.


Neena added:” “You need to remember that some of these methods take time and women need to put in some effort, but we promise you, it will be worth it in the end!Come and talk to us at our Bladder Awareness Event and discover how we can help you either now or if you experience these issues in the future.”

The event is being led by Neena and her team of nursing specialists. If successful the team plan to hold other events later this year.

Car parking for the event is free and tea and coffee is available from 6pm.
