YAG Laser Service

There are two procedures which will be provided

  • YAG Laser Capsulotomy - a small proportion of patients who undergo cataract surgery will see opacification of the posterior lens capsule, this prevent light reaching the retina. The laser is used to perforate the opacified capsule and allow light to pass through. The procedure restores clear vision, and usually only one treatment is needed, with no follow-up.

  • YAG Laser Peripheral Iridotomy - this is a prophylatic procedure for glaucoma patients. The laser is used to open the drainage angle in the eye to increase fluid flow. The procedure is used for patients at risk of developing acute glaucoma and reduces the probability of onset of acute glaucoma. Patients will attend for a follow-up appointment, and may need more than one treatment.

Minor Oculoplastics Procedure Service

A range of eyelid and lacrimal procedures will be delivered at GEH. These will include syringing of tear ducts, meibomian cyst/chalazion removal, eyelid lesions, and insertion of punctal plugs for watery eyes.
